The Bay Ride is a 135-mile loop around the whole Bay Area in one day. It starts and finishes at Sports Basement Presidio in San Francisco. It crosses the Golden Gate into Marin, takes the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to the East Bay, rounds the South Bay through San Jose, and comes home up the Peninsula. If you'd rather ride 35 miles, both routes leave together and the short one finishes in Oakland.

It started when a few friends wondered whether you could ride around the entire Bay in a day. Twelve years later, about a thousand riders show up every August, and it sells out every year.

Every dollar riders pay goes into Safe Streets, which we put to work in three ways. We take direct action, like the day a volunteer crew spent with rakes and loppers clearing the shoulder on Skyline Boulevard. We advocate for riders on roads like Hesperian Boulevard at Lewelling, so bikes get written into the plans before the paving crews show up. And we fund the projects that close the gaps in the Bay Trail, which is the most direct way to buy miles of protected riding.

The Bay Ride is put on by LiveTheBay.org, a volunteer-run 501(c)(3). Details and registration at TheBayRide.com.
